Woodrow Morris "Sam" Bradley

HAWKINS – Funeral service for Woodrow Morris “Sam” Bradley, 85, of Hawkins will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at the First Baptist Church in Hawkins with Reverend Zach Tunnell and Dr. Bill Holmes officiating. Interment will be in the Hawkins Cemetery. Mr. Bradley passed away at 8:01 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2018, due to complications from a heart attack he suffered on the preceding Tuesday early morning.

Mr. Bradley was born May 28, 1932 in Canadian, TX to Arther Marvin and Chellie Belle Montgomery Bradley. He graduated from Portales, New Mexico, High School in 1950, where he was a member of the high school band. He received an Engineering Degree from NMIMT, where he joined the Order of Odd Fellows. Sam worked in the Magma Mine in Superior, Arizona, and the Highland Uranium Mine in Douglas, Wyoming. He also worked as a self-employed farmer near Muleshoe, Texas, for 19 years.

He met his wife Hazel in March of 1962, and they were married six months later. Before their children were of school age, Sam and Hazel were active with Lay Witness Missions in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.

Sam was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hawkins, Texas, where he served as a deacon. He was a volunteer fireman for Hawkins from 1982-1988, and was mayor of Hawkins for three terms, from 2006-2012.

Sam served as R. A. counselor in three churches and sponsored boys in over 25 camps. He coached the boys’ basketball and track teams. Once they won first place in the association’s basketball tournament.

Sam was active with International Crusades, witnessing in nine foreign countries and 26 missions, eight of which were dental missions as a dental assistant with Dr. Dan White of Mineola, Texas. He was an advocate of Compassion International. He and his wife Hazel sponsored nine Compassion children and witnessed two graduate from the Compassion program. They also sponsored four other children from other programs, of whom several went to college.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Arther and Chellie Montgomery Bradley; foster parents, Frank and Earline Bryant and their daughter, Colene Bryant Byron; brother, Gene Bradley; sister, Eleanor Nelson West; and grandson, Benjamin Bradley.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Bradley; son, Alton Bradley; daughter, Jacqueline Worley; grandchildren, Aaron Bradley, Bethany Stockholm, and Naomi, Victor, Elena, Joel, and Timothy Worley; and great-grandchildren Benjamin and Ethan Stockholm, and Baileyanne Bradley.

Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, March 12, 2018 at Croley Funeral Home in Hawkins.
