Services for Virgil Edward Smith, 95, of Gladewater will be 12:00 P.M. Sunday, December 12, 2016, at the Croley Funeral Home Chapel in Gladewater with visitation an hour before services. Interment will follow services at Union Grove Cemetery. Virgil went to be with the Lord Friday, December 9, 2016 in Longview.
Mr. Smith was born May 15, 1921 in the Union Grove community to the late O.F. Smith and Lavada Ramey Smith. He attended school at Union Grove where he played football as well as other sports. Virgil worked as a Production Supervisor in the East Texas Oil Fields. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was one of the brave soldiers who stormed the beach at the Battle of Iwo Jima.
Virgil enjoyed watching sports, fishing and tending to his animals as well as spending time with family and friends. He loved his life and was a great companion to the neighbors of his community; always willing to supervise.
The fruits of God’s Spirit were always visible in his life. Love, Joy, Peace and Happiness were always in his Faith. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his son Edward L. Smith of Austin; daughter Lavada Ann Smith of Lewisville; sister Alma Duncan of Norman, Oklahoma; nieces Melinda Smith and Janice Snow; nephews Olin Smith, Mike Smith, Mark Smith and George Smith; close friends and neighbors Gary Wallace, Ricky Wallace, Sherry Morgan and Todd Morgan as well as many other loving family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers George, Buddy and Frank.
