Stephen �Steve� Elvo Hathaway, 68, of Longview, TX, was peacefully called home on Friday, December 19, 2014. Visitation will be at Grubbs-Loyd Funeral Home in Diana on Sunday, December 21, 2014, from 5 to 7 PM. Graveside services will be held at Henderson Family Cemetery in Ore City on Monday, December 22, 2014, at 10 AM, with David Sprattley officiating. Steve was born in Waco, TX, on May 29, 1946 to Kenneth C. and Johnnie Hathaway. The family resided in Waco and Snyder before moving to Ore City in the mid 50�s. He attended New Diana and Ore City schools, and was a proud member of the second graduating class of Ore City in 1964. After high school, he continued his education at Tyler Junior College and the University of Texas in Austin. Following in his father�s footsteps, Steve chose a career in banking. After serving in various capacities at banks throughout Texas, he worked at Security State Bank in Ore City, serving the customers for over 30 years. While living in Ore City, he was an active member of the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed working with the Ministerial Alliance at Christmas to bring cheer to members of the community. Over the years, he also coached Pee Wee football, assisted with fundraisers for Boy Scouts of America and served on the Ore City ISD school board. Steve was an avid golfer and spent as many days as possible on the course with his brother or other golfing buddies. He also enjoyed reading, solving crossword puzzles, and watching football. He especially loved cheering on his beloved Texas Longhorns. He got great enjoyment from visits with his family, friends, and most especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his quick wit and desire to bring a smile to others. Steve is preceded in death by an infant brother, Kenneth John; granddaughter, Scarlet; and parents, Kenneth C. and Johnnie. Surviving him is his wife of 30 years, Melinda; brother, Gary and wife, Mieko; sons, Todd and wife, Janet, Kelly, Blake and wife, Karla, Zach, Casey and wife, Christi; grandchildren, Kirk, Kyle, Keelan, Chelsea, Cooper, Kaleb and Alex; and five step-grandchildren. The family gives special thanks and recognition to Dr. Kavita Nirmal and the nurses and staff at Texas Oncology Longview. Also special thanks to the nurses and staff of Compass Hospice.
