Sara Ailene Dumas passed away peacefully on January 1, 2025, at the age of 91 in Nacogdoches, TX. Born on March 4, 1933, in Gilmer, TX to Matt Davis and Eddie Mae (Capps) Davis.
"It all started in Indian Rock, I came right outta the dirt, I grew up like a weed, and now it's all coming to a close here in Nacogdoches," said Sara a few days before she passed.
In the 1960s, she made history as the first female supervisor at the Gilmer Garment Factory, breaking barriers for women in the workplace. Her dedication to public service did not stop there; she went on to serve as the Executive Director of Upshur County Economic Development, contributing significantly to the growth and improvement of the area.
Sara’s love for the community was evident in her proudest accomplishments. She played a pivotal role in the development of the Kelsey Creek Sanctuary and nature trails, promoting environmental appreciation and conservation. Her leadership in repurposing the old post office building on the square to become the Historic Upshur Museum further exemplified her commitment to preserving local history for future generations. Additionally, Sara demonstrated an extraordinary devotion to service. Her role as a member of the Gilmer Rotary Club, where she served a term as president, guiding and inspiring fellow members with her vision and spirit. As a village activist and an ardent supporter of the local Democratic party, Sara worked tirelessly to advocate for her community, always striving for a brighter future for all.
Beyond her professional and civic achievements, Sara had a zest for life that shone brightly through her interests. She enjoyed traveling from coast to coast and exploring countries across the Caribbean, Oceania, Europe, and the Middle East. One of her most beloved experiences was witnessing the Monarch butterflies in Mexico, a trip that deeply resonated with her love of nature and adventure.
Sara is survived by her two sons, Phil Yocom and wife Carrie of Hemphill, TX and Jeff Yocom of Henderson, Tx; grandchildren, Michael Yocom of New Braunfels, TX, Kelly Reed and husband Chad of Bullard, TX, Angela Yocom and husband Jamie of Henderson, TX, Danielle Spears and husband Chris of Lumberton, TX, Kitti Hudson and husband Matt of Pineland, TX; nephew, Chris Erdos of McGaheysville, VA; along with nine great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Jean Bradford and Pat Hackler; and brother, Charles "Butch" Davis.
Visitation and memorial services will be held at Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer, Texas. Visitation will take place on February 1, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by a memorial service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Nacogdoches Senior Center on Sunday, February 2, 2025 from 2:00 PM-4:00 PM.
In her last few months, she was asked what she thought the meaning of life was. "To be happy. Ma used to always say, 'People are about as happy as they wanna be.' That has always stuck with me as something to always keep in mind and to live by. All you can do is try anyway."
