Merkel "Merk" Frederick Fatherree passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family as they were singing worship songs, on November 6, 2024, in Gilmer, Texas. He was born on February 23, 1931, in Spencerville, Oklahoma to Clarence Frederick and Thelma Ann (Adcock) Fatherree. Merk was a man of many trades throughout his life, including being a truck driver, prison guard, farming and retiring from Upshur County as a heavy equipment operator, but more than anything he loved the Lord and his family.

A true man of God, he was an active member of the Assembly of God Church in Gilmer and Gladewater for 50 years. Merk's contributions to his church were immeasurable. His unwavering faith and dedication to the teachings of his church shaped the lives of many, and his kindhearted personality touched everyone that crossed his path. Merk was deeply involved in his church community, serving as a dedicated leader in the Royal Ranger Boys Program at Church. His passion for enriching the lives of young boys was evident from his efforts in starting the Pinewood Derby program at his church, an initiative that eventually spread to other churches.

Merk’s strong character was complemented by his love for farming, horses, and the great outdoors. He took pride in managing his cattle and nurturing beautiful gardens. In his free time, he found joy in building birdhouses. Additionally, Merk served his country honorably in the Army during the Korean War, a testament to his bravery and commitment to serving others.

Those left to cherish his memories are his beloved wife of 69 years, Ruby Lee (Baker) Fatherree; daughter, Tammy Mitchell and husband Mark; son, Rickey Fatherree and wife Aleshia; 4 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 4 bonus grandchildren; 11 bonus great grandchildren; 1 bonus great great grandchild; 2 sisters, Jean Brice and Maxine Pierce; 3 brothers, Willie, Leon and Curtis Fatherree along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
