Johnnie Wayne Jackson, Sr., of Gilmer, TX, passed away June 13, 2021, at his home in Gilmer, TX, just a few days after his 70th birthday. He was surrounded by family and loved ones.
Johnnie was born on June 10, 1951, and was a lifetime resident of Upshur County. He retired after many years of service from Longview Bridge and Road where he had the privilege to work side by side with many of his family members, including brothers and sons, at various times. He was a tireless, hard worker and his understanding of his industry continued to be called upon after his retirement.
Johnnie epitomized simplicity. He enjoyed best the things in life that mean the most; hard work, simple living, hunting, fishing, living within your means, and family. In truth, everything took a back seat to his family- especially his grandchildren, and if they happened to have a fishing pole in their hand, his world was perfect. He was an avid Gilmer Buckeye fan but enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren compete- whatever their school or team. In his early years, he mentored and coached many young men and women on the baseball and softball field.
You generally would find Johnnie in a camouflage ball cap, blue shirt and blue jeans, wearing a sideways grin with a sparkle in his blue eyes.
Mr. Jackson is survived by his son, Johnnie Wayne “Rebel” Jackson, Jr. and wife, Kim; daughter, Cheyenne Gray and husband, Cody, all of Gilmer; brothers, Jimmie Jackson and wife, Margaret of Pittsburg, Tommy Jackson and wife, Lesa of Simpsonville, David Jackson and wife, Cindy of Pittsburg; sisters, Terry Meagley of Arkansas, Diane Martin and husband, Randy of Pittsburg, Renee’ Wilson and husband, Howard, also of Pittsburg; and grandchildren, Ansley, Avery and Cash Jackson, and Cadence Gray.
Johnnie is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Betty Jackson and his beloved son, Cole.
Funeral service will be held 2:00 pm, Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at Oak Hill Missionary Baptist Church, located on FM 2088 in Bettie, TX, with Bro. James Rush and Bro. David Jackson officiating with interment to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
