John W. Shipp Gladewater " Services for John W. Shipp, 78, of Gladewater, will be held on Friday, March 4, 2011, at 2 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church, with Reverend Dick Dobbins and Larry W. Osborne officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery. Born on May 26, 1932, in Groesbeck, Texas, he died on Monday, February 28, 2011. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a 1950 graduate of Gladewater High School and attended Stephen F. Austin University on a football scholarship. On February 4, 1956, he married Jean Waldron. For over fifty years, he was part owner of the family business, Shipp"s Marine. He was a former member and president of the Gladewater School Board, a member of the Gladewater City Council, and a member of the Gladewater Chamber of Commerce. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and the Ages and Stages Sunday School class. He is survived by his daughter, Debra Dawne Shipp of Rockwall; brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Cathy Shipp of Gladewater; brother-in-law, Dr. R. Lloyd Waldron of Tyler; sweetheart, Margaret Phillips of Gladewater; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alva E. "Pappy" and Laura Shipp, and wife, Jean Waldron Shipp. Pallbearers will be John Thomas, Todd Clifton, Richie Phillips, Brent Abernathy, Jimmy Watson, and Mark Shipp. Honorary pallbearers will be the employees of Shipp"s Marine and Doss Hunt, Bill Christian, John Black, Joe Jones, Bill Hewitt, Bob Pate. If so desired, memorials may be given to the charity of your choice. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. on Thursday, March 3, 2011, at Croley Funeral Home in Gladewater.
