James H. Smith

On Tuesday, December 22, 2020, James H. Smith was called to his eternal home, at the age of 71. James was born March 14, 1949, in Junction, Texas. He grew up in the Hill Country of West Texas with 7 siblings where many memories were made and still talked about to this day. There was never a dull moment in the Terry House. There was always a competition to be had either around the table playing dominos, cards, or just simply a foot race he may have challenged you to.

He has been a Roughneck his whole life starting as a Roustabout for McAlester Fuel Co. before moving to offshore drilling rigs in 1987. He worked offshore until his retirement. He was an active member of Glade Creek Baptist Church in Gilmer,Texas, where he enjoyed fellowship with the congregation. In his time at home he enjoyed writing his original songs and performing them for anyone who would listen. He had some of his original writings published in poems and poet books. He enjoyed hunting, softball, playing cards, watching his grandkids’ ball games and performances, and spending time with family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Euel Jackson Smith, Jr., and Bill and Marlena Terry, son, James Hughey Smith, Jr., brother, Mike Terry, and sister, Barbara Boone.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Joann Smith, son, E.J. Smith- wife, Shelly, daughters, Kelli Bean- husband, Jeff, and Krystal Smith- husband, Jason, brothers, Gary Smith- wife, Joy, Steve Terry- wife, Susan, Richard Smith- wife, Sheron, sisters, Patricia Owens- husband, Raymond, Mollie Upton- husband, Paul, 11 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate his life, will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at the White Oak Community Church.
