Gary O'Neal Smith

Gary O’Neal Smith, 82, of Hawkins left this world to be with his Savior November 26, 2020. He was born May 12, 1938 in West Point, GA to the late Marcus Albert Smith and Annie Ruth Prather. He joined the army at 18 years of age where he was stationed in Germany during the Berlin Crisis. He returned to Georgia and then moved to Dallas Texas to work with his brother in law as a painter. It was here he met and married Brenda Carolyn Chaney on March 18, 1961. They were married 59 years. He went into business for himself in 1967 and became a very successful paint contractor. He retired to Hawkins Texas in 2004. He loved fishing and camping at Lake of the Pines and watching the East Texas Deer and was a member of the Baptist faith.

Gary is survived by his wife, Brenda Smith, three daughters, Tanya Wagner and husband Jim, Vicki Childre, and Stacy Davlin and husband Tommy; brother, Phillip Smith and wife Elizabeth; and sister, Betty Jackson; grandchildren, Caitlin Bradley, Chelsi Duckworth, Courtni Bradley, Kiefer Davlin and wife Savannah, Lexi Ingram, and Peyton Threlkeld and husband Brandon; and great grandchildren, Cadence Duckworth, Callie Duckworth, Zane Davlin, Brinley Threlkeld, Max Bradley, Zadee Davlin, and Korbin Threlkeld.

He was preceded in death by his parent; brothers, Maurice Smith and Lamar Smith; sister, Bobby Martin, and grandchild, Chase O’Neal Duckworth.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, November 30, 2020 in the Chapel of Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer with Bro. Bryan Peck officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 PM until 11:00 AM prior to the funeral service. His interment will follow the funeral at 2:00 P.M. Monday, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Edgewood, Texas.
