Estell Elwell Carroll

Services for Mrs. Estell Elwell Carroll, 101, of Gilmer will be held at 4:00 P.M, Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Croley Funeral Home Chapel in Gilmer with Larry W. Osborne and Chuck Nicholson officiating with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Mrs. Carroll passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2011 in Gilmer. She was born on January 22, 1910, in Upshur County, Texas to Bertie and Etta Presnell Elwell. Mrs. Carroll received her masters degree from East Texas State University. She retired in 1974 from Gilmer ISD after teaching 43 years in Upshur County public schools. Mrs. Carroll was a charter member of Midway Baptist Church and a member of the Upshur County Retired Teachers Association. She is survived by grandchildren, Candace Carroll of New York, Brittany Benning and husband, Jason of Troy, Ohio; nephews, Tony Elwell, Jim Elwell and Johnnie Cates; and nieces, Suzanne Elwell-Cappel and Deborah Walker. Mrs. Carroll was preceded in death by her husband, Therman Carroll; her son and daughter-in-law, Mac and Joan Carroll; sister Hazel Elwell; and brothers, A.F. "Dumpy" Elwell and C.E. "Spookey" Elwell. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 3:00 until service time at the funeral home.
