Ernest Maples, Jr.

Funeral services for, Ernest Maples, Jr., age 93 of Big Sandy, will be held on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Hawkins, 210 Forest St, Hawkins, TX 75765 with Dr. Bill Holmes officiating. The family will greet family and friends one hour before the service at the church. Services will conclude at the church. Private interment will be at Hawkins City Cemetery.
Ernest passed away on Monday, July 16, 2018 at Focus Care of Gilmer. He was born on March 4, 1925 in Houston, Texas to the late Ernest Maples, Sr. and Eldora Jane Scott Maples. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Pharmacist Third Class, receiving the European Theater Ribbon with two battle stars. Ernest worked and retired as a union carpenter, lastly for the David Gipson Company. He was a children’s Sunday school teacher for many years, and taught and guided many children in his life. He volunteered with helping hands, and enjoyed woodworking and being outdoors. He married his loving wife, the former Bobbie Nell Tucker, in Old Trap, North Carolina on March 17, 1945.
Ernest is survived by his wife of 73 years, Bobbie Maples of Big Sandy; sons, Ernest “Ernie” Maples III of Big Sandy, David Maples and wife Jackie of Rowlett; four grandchildren, Ernest “Ernie” Maples IV, Crystal Bohannon, Blake Maples, Jonathan Stubbs; three great-grandchildren, Kennedy Isabella Bohannon, Andrew Stubbs, and Caiden Stubbs.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Eldora Jane Whatley, and Billie Voncile Danheim.
