Eddie “Max” Doty, 81, and a resident of the Simpsonville Community, was called home on Sunday, November 13, 2016 after a long and valiant battle with cancer and congestive heart failure.
Max was born March 12, 1935 in Hico, Texas, to John Vernon Doty and Loraine Hail Doty, who preceded him in death. His older brother Don Altus and younger brother Jerry Lynn, also preceded him.
As a young man, Max loved drag racing and spent his spare time at the Uptown Garage in Grand Prairie, Texas and The Yellowbelly Drag Strip. In 1959 he married the love of his life, Julie Allen Carroll, who says she “married him for his car!” They began their life together in Arlington, Texas then lived in Mansfield, Texas for 30 plus years before moving to their farm, “Sunny Meadows” in the Simpsonville Community in 2003.
Max loved to sing, and he and Julie joined their many friends in singing and playing bluegrass music. He played the mandolin and sang duets with Julie at various festivals and events.
They enjoyed years of RV traveling with close friends, and were especially fond of Colorado, Montana, Florida and Tennessee. They loved swimming, snorkeling and cruising on riverboats and ocean liners.
Max loved socializing and was accused of being a “foodie”. He had the nickname of Max “hot links” Doty.
Max graduated from Grand Prairie High School in 1953, and completed training for Fire Brigade and Machinist School for LTV (Ling Temco Vought). He spent 14 years as warehouse manager for Gilbert Systems in Arlington. He retired from his machinist position at LTV after 30 years of service.
Max is survived by his spouse of 57 years, Julie, a son Eddie Max, Jr. and wife Karen, grandsons Justin and Bradley, and daughter and son-in-law Laura Doty Cozby and Jerry, grandsons Eddie and Gary, and great granddaughter, Ava Carter, Max’s only sister Lynda Kay Doty lives in Houston, Texas. Max’s inlaws include Michael Carroll and wife Elizabeth, Ellen DeLoach and husband Ron, Mark Carroll and wife Rene’, Ann Doty Ewbank and husband Ed, and their respective families. There are also numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Max was delighted when his mother - at the age of 80 – married his stepfather, Curtis Britton. Several members of the step family survive him.
Max was a faithful member of the Church of Christ in Gilmer. Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. at the Gilmer Church of Christ, followed by lunch for family and friends. The funeral service will be at the same location of 1:00 P.M. Graveside services afterwards will be for family members.
