Dorothy Geneva Greer passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, February 3, 2014, at Longview Regional Medical Center, while surrounded by her immediate family. Born in Overton, Texas on October 11, 1918, Geneva was the daughter of Albert D. Blackwell and his wife, Maude C. Schuler. She was the great-granddaughter of Jediah J. Blackwell, who moved to Rusk County from Georgia in 1857. Geneva Blackwell grew up in Overton and graduated from New London High School in 1936. She married Lloyd Stevens on April 17, 1938 and shortly thereafter moved to Pointe `a la Hache, Louisiana, where her husband was employed by the Humble Oil Company. In 1942, Mr. and Mrs. Stevens moved back to Texas, eventually settling in Gladewater in 1944. Lloyd Stevens passed away in 1968. After fifteen years as a widow, Geneva married Herbert Greer in 1983, and they spent twenty -three happy years together before his death in 2006. Mrs. Greer devoted much of her time to family and friends. She joined the United Methodist Church of Gladewater in 1944, and at the time of her death, she was the oldest living member of the congregation. She was also involved in many community activities, including Gusher Days and the Gladewater Garden Club. Geneva Greer was preceded in death by her two brothers, Carl T. Blackwell and Earl L. Blackwell, both from the Overton area, and by her sister Annie R. Smith from Henderson, Texas. She is survived by her three children, Mrs. Trecia S. Roberts of Austin, TX; Mr. Ronald L. Stevens and Ms. Melesia L. Stevens, both of Gilmer, TX; by seven grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at Croley Funeral Home in Gladewater. Visitation will be from 12:30-1:30 P.M., followed by a "celebration of her life" service with Larry W. Osborne officiating. Interment at Lakewood Memorial Cemetery in Henderson will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Creative Christians at the United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1167, Gladewater, Texas 75647. Checks should be made out to the First United Methodist Church and should include the notation "Geneva Greer-Creative Christians".
