Graveside services for Mrs. Dorothy Sue Ashley Helms, 93, of Longview, Texas will be at 4:00 P.M., on Friday, May 5, 2017 at Sunset Memorial Park in Gilmer with Bro. Lawrence Thompson officiating under the direction of Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer.

Mrs. Helms was born on January 20, 1924 in White County, Arkansas to Edward and Sue Anna Parks Ashley. She passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 in Longview. Mrs. Helms came to Gilmer with her family in 1932. The Ashley family owned and operated Ashley Meat Market on South Montgomery Street for many years. Mrs. Helms attended Union Hill school from 1932-1939, graduated from Gilmer High School in 1941, and also attended Dallas Business College. She was a homemaker and a former member of Oak Hill Baptist Church, First Baptist Church in Gilmer and most recently, Mobberly Baptist Church in Longview. Mrs. Helms was the youngest of 10 children and they have all preceded her in death. Our loving mother, Dot, was known for her sense of humor, wit and spunky personality.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Julie Edwards of Harmony; daughters, Leslie Thurman of Mesquite, Barbara Beasley England of Longview and Diana Dunn and her husband Budd, of Hallsville; nine grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Hugh Ashley and Sue Anna Parks Ashley and her first and second husband, Arlie A. Edwards and R.D. Helms.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 5, 2017 from 1:30 P.M. until 3:30 P.M. at Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer.
