Doris Marie Thomas

Doris Marie Thomas passed Saturday, May 4, 2024.  Doris was born in Upshur County on her grandparent’s farm on January 4, 1936. She was the daughter of Charlie and Mary Etta Hewitt. She grew up on a dairy farm and attended school in Gladewater, Texas.  

Doris met her future husband, Lee H. Thomas, or better known as Pete, at a welcome home party thrown in his honor upon returning home from the Army.  As he walked down the stairs, Doris was in the center of the room, strumming the guitar and singing. Their eyes met and they were never apart after that. They married June 16, 1961, and were just shy of celebrating 63 years.  

Doris attended college for two years before starting work as a hostess on the Trailways Bus Line.  She later began a 20-year career at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel as a desk clerk and moved her way up to front office manager. When they closed to remodel, she started her own business, Global Travels, where she found great success. She was a part of numerous organizations, politics and clubs and achieved great victories over the years. 

In her spare time, she loved to spend it with family and friends.  She loved to travel with her husband Pete, and they were both blessed to visit beautiful places all over the world. After retiring, Doris and Pete moved back to Pritchett and settled into life on a farm.  Doris was very involved in taking care of their cows and dogs and especially enjoyed her time spent on the lawn mower. 

Doris had a beautiful smile; an unforgettable laugh and she will be missed.

A Memorial Service to honor and celebrate Doris's life will be held on May 25, 2024, at Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer, Texas starting at 1:00 PM. Friends and family are invited to gather to pay their respects and share fond memories of Doris.
