David Matthew Smith of Hawkins Texas, went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 23, 2024. David was born November 18, 1969, in South Bend Indiana to Lavern and Betty Lou Haberling Smith. In 1977, David and his family moved to Texas where they established roots in Big Sandy. David graduated from Big Sandy High School and was a man of various trades and talents. David was most recently employed at Wilson Excavating and Paving Company.
David had a personality that would light up a room. He knew everyone and never met a stranger. He could make a person smile and yet also shake their head in disbelief at the same time. He loved his friends and family, and he found the most joy in being Uncle David to all. Spending time with Jordan, his nephew, his best friend was where he found his most precious moments. In his free time, he loved fishing, quail hunting, and drinking cold beer with his friends. He really enjoyed spending time at the Wilson Ranch in West Texas.
David is survived in death by his siblings: Kenneth French Sr. (Teresa) of Victoria, Lois French Triebenbach (Terry) of Big Sandy, Tony French of Gladewater, Thomas Smith of Lawton, and Julia Smith of Hawkins; his nieces and nephews, Kelly French Hodge (Alan), Kenneth French Jr (Ashley), Kristy French Kirkland (Sebie), Jhermy French, Autumn French, Jastin Baker (Hannah), Jordan Baker, Brystol Smith; 7 great nieces and nephews, and countless friends and extended family.
David was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Joseph and Loul Haberling, paternal grandparents Kenneth Smith, and Ona May Merrill parents LaVern and Betty Lou Smith, and his sister-in-law, the late wife of Thomas, Mica Fletcher Smith of Lawton.
A Celebration of Life with take place April 6, 2024, at Sit’Em Down Cowboy Church at 10 am, in Big Sandy, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Limbs for Life Foundation, 9604 N. May Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73120.
