Clayton Russell Mitchell

Funeral services for Clayton Russell Mitchell, 94, of Gladewater, are scheduled for 10:00 AM on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at the Croley Funeral Home Chapel in Gladewater with Dr. Raymond Boulter officiating. Mr. Mitchell will be laid to rest at Gladewater Memorial Park. The family will receive friends be Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Croley Funeral Home.

Clayton Mitchell was born on January 21, 1925 in Vernon, Texas and passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Shreveport, LA.

He was a lifetime resident of East Texas. Mr. Mitchell served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a devoted member of the First Christian Church in Gladewater. During his life, Mr. Mitchell worked at Zale’s Jewelry and later was self-employed as a painter and landscaper.

Clayton is survived by his 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Sheron and Richard Smith of Gladewater; Pam Martin of Longview; and Latressa and Brad Watson of Gladewater; 11 grandchildren, Wade and Shannon Hagan, Tracie and Steve Resendez, Heidi McPeak, Rodney Carrington, Barry and Paige Stephenson, Holly and Anthony Bonnette, April and Kyle Hayes, Jessica Gostenik, Austin Watson, Lindsey and Dwayne Watson, Claire and Craig Watson.

Pallbearers will be Brad Watson, Austin Watson, Craig Watson, Wade Hagan, Skylar Hagan and Richard Smith. Honorary pallbearer: Jimmy Martin.

He is preceded in death by his wife Axie Mitchell who passed away in 2006; his parents, Clarence Mitchell and Mabel Mitchell White and a sister, Marie Rushing.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials in Mr. Mitchell’s memory be made to the First Christian Church in Gladewater at 309 N. Cotton Street, Gladewater, Texas.
