Charles Henry Upchurch, 94, of Hawkins, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2021 in Mineola, Texas. Charles was born May 17, 1927 in Bedias, Texas to the late Henry Jacob Upchurch and Elsie Marie Hubler. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Charles was a 60 year Mason and was a member of the Hawkins Masonic Lodge 1293. Mr. Upchurch retired from Continental Airlines where he worked as a mechanic; after retirement he worked for the TDC as a guard. Charles had an engineering mind and could make anything even his own tools when needed. He enjoyed woodworking and tinkering with just about anything. Charles was a God fearing Christian and devoted member of First Baptist Church of Hawkins. He had a servant’s heart and served, attended and helped with maintenance at every Baptist Church in Wood County. Charles will not soon be forgotten by all those that knew him.
Charles is survived by his niece and caregiver Lynette Irizarry and husband Edgar; step son Lonzo Jackie Ray and wife Michele; daughter-in-law Alyse Ray; grandchildren Denise Scott and husband John, Shawn Ray and wife Shelby, Andrea McGuffey and husband Matt and Alex Ray and wife Cristy; children Randy Upchurch and Patty Upchurch; several great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other loving family.
He is preceded in death by his parents Jacob and Elsie Upchurch, wife of 35 years Mary Louise Upchurch, sisters Dorothy Phillips and Marie Hall, and brothers Phillip Lowell Upchurch and Raymond Heweld Upchurch.
Funeral services for Charles will be 12:00 P.M. Saturday, June 5, 2021 at the First Baptist Church of Hawkins with Bro. Randall Hodges officiating under the direction of Croley Funeral Home in Hawkins. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Liberty Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Croley Funeral Home in Hawkins.
