Byron S. Spencer

Byron was born in 1935 near Gilmer, at Soules Chapel, he spent most of his life in Upshur County. In 1954 Byron volunteered for the draft and served for 1954-1956. After returning home he received a master’s degree from Sam Houston State University. Byron has always had a love for agriculture, in 1961 he was the youngest County Agent in Texas (of Bell County). He served as an Ag teacher for Union Grove ISD from 1962-1971, and was the Vocational and Transportation Director for Gilmer ISD until 1981. After retiring he has devoted himself fulltime to his ranch. Byron has been active serving the Chamber of Commerce, Yamboree Livestock Committee and served on the Governor of Texas Agriculture Committee. Byron also served as the East Texas Yamboree President in 1975. Byron is survived by his former wife, Lynda Spencer of Gilmer, their sons, Dr. Randall Spencer, DVM, Carol Spencer, and Mike Spencer and wife, Debbie all of Gilmer; brother, Leon Spencer of Athens; sisters, Jean Hull of Illinois and Wanda Fennell of Soules Chapel; and grandchildren, Kirby, Chase, Cy, Casey, and Caulen Spencer. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Ima Spencer; and brothers, Billy G. Spencer.
Graveside service for Mr. Byron S. Spencer will be held at 2:00 P.M, Saturday, July 4, 2020 at Soules Chapel Cemetery with Bart Austin officiating and under the direction of Croley Funeral Home of Gilmer. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Friday, July 3, 2020 at Croley Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the East Texas Yamboree Livestock Scholarship Program.
