Alma Fitzgerald

Alma Lenora “Grannie” Gage Fitzgerald passed from this life on 27 November 2021 at Hospice of East Texas in Tyler at the age of 103 years, 8 months and 22 days. Alma was born 5 April 1918 to Martin Henry Gage and Ossie Elvira Mooney Gage at Shady Grove, Upshur County, Texas. She was the fourth of eight children produced by this union. Her parents, and all her siblings, preceded her in death. Her paternal lines were Gage and Wolf and her maternal lines were Mooney and Hail. All these lines descended from East Texas and Upshur County Pioneers.
Alma was raised on her family’s dairy farm in the Shady Grove/Elam Springs area of Upshur County. She attended and graduated from Big Sandy Public Schools. She was recently recognized as the oldest attending graduate at a Homecoming.
On her birthday, 5 April 1942, Alma married Herbert Walter “Dutch” Fitzgerald. The couple made their lifelong home in the Shady Grove area of Upshur County. Their union produced five children; Walter Scott (Joanne) Fitzgerald of Allentown, Texas; Glenda Alma McDonald Hardwick of Big Sandy, Texas; Joe Martin (Brenda) Fitzgerald of Shady Grove, Texas; and Carolyn Sue (Charles) Langford of Big Sandy, Texas. She was preceded in death by Dutch in April 2002 and Glenda in June 2021.
Alma is survived by four of her children, Scott, Joe, Carolyn, and Martin; grandson Chris (Nicki) McDonald, Mark (Sharon) McDonald, Steve (Andria) Langford and Martin (Susie) Fitzgerald; granddaughter Sharon Langford (Dave) Causey, great grandsons Christopher and Cody McDonald; Michael, Jacob, and Jove Fitzgerald; great granddaughters Bailee McDonald (Kenton) Miller and Parmer Fitzgerald; great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Alma lived a long, productive, caring life. She gave to her community, her church and loved the Lord. The lord, in His grave and mercy, called her Home to reward her for her decades of love she gave those around her. She will be sorely missed.
